It's definitely pronounced 'vicker-idge' - originally, when a Church of England priest became vicar of a church, they usually had a 'grace and favour' house and garden, known as a Vicarage. Most seasons would see some form of fete or coffee morning and therefore the house and garden was very important for hosting/entertainment etc. This started to happen shortly after the 'Capability Brown' era.
