a kingdom of salvation

"And has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David" Luke 1:69

"The Horn Of Salvation Brings Life To Christians. Martin Luther: "He has raised it up in the house of his servant David," namely, through the Word and the Holy Spirit. That is a wonderful thing: it is a kingdom on earth, but still a kingdom of salvation. It brings the two things together! The "house of David" means the lineage and family of David, and he was a human being. Zechariah does not speak of a kingdom of angels, for this kingdom is placed among people, in the house of David. And a "house" is a people who are altogether mortal. How does such honor come into shame, such salvation into wretchedness, such life into death? People who are mortal shall not die; those who are the devil's shall be God's! You have to patch these things together: people, who die, are nevertheless immortal in this kingdom. A Christian who comes into this kingdom does not die and cannot die. For Christ has defeated death so that we do not have to die, has taken our sin onto himself so that we do not have to bear it and has overcome the devil so that a Christian will never be enslaved to him or to sin. This text must be true: "He has raised up a horn of salvation in the house of his servant David." And therefore a Christian is living, without sin, and never enslaved to the devil. SERMON ON SAINT JOHN'S DAY (1525)." pg. 40,41 "Luke" Vol. III [Reformation Commentary On Scripture]
