the American writer Nelson Algren

Yesterday I mentioned that I picked up at a local thrift store used book titled, "The Neon Wilderness" Twenty-four Stories by Nelson Algren With an Introduction by the author published in 1960. When I mentioned to Carol I found a volume of short stories by Nelson Algren she drew a blank. It seems Carol had never heard of the writer Nelson Algren. Algren wrote the novel "The Man with the Golden Arm" which won the first National Book Award. Algren wrote the novel "A Walk on the Wild Side" and several other books. To quote the back of this volume of short stories, "He (Algren) has been described by Malcolm Cowley as "the poet of the Chicago slums," and by Ernest Hemingway as "one of. . . the greatest writers."
