how to discern biblical Truth from heresy?

It is 7:20 AM Wednesday morning here in West Michigan. I woke up early this morning thinking about a question someone me asked me at the bottom of one of my recent videos. The person asked me what I thought about the writings of the Eastern and Western Church Fathers.

Question-
Thank you for the inspiration to read! What is your attitude about John Chrysostom and Gregory the Theologian books?

My answer to her question-
I think when you read any Christian theologian it is important to have a solid knowledge of the Bible. We can benefit from the writings of past Christians like Chrysostom and Gregory the Theologian but they were men who did not have a perfect grasp of divine Truth. We can gleam Christian wisdom in the writings of Christians throughout the ages, we will also come across teachings that are unbiblical. For example I believe the Bible teaches salvation by grace alone and not not by works. We can not earn our way into Heaven. Jesus paid for it all and we are debtors to grace. I think the Early Church Fathers West and East tended to emphasize human endeavor like asceticism or free will that I feel uncomfortable with. We must stick with the doctrines clearly taught in the Bible, which teaches we are saved by Christ Alone and not by anything we do. Now that being said once we are saved and are In Christ we will live a holy life in the power of the Holy Spirit. But that being said we can read the Church Fathers West and East and find things of help in our spiritual walk.

"[7] Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
[8] All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.
[9] I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
[10] The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
[11] I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

[12] But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.
[13] The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.
[14] I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
[15] As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
[16] And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd." John 10:7-16

Mexico City The Day of the Dead

It is 3:14 PM Wednesday afternoon here in West Michigan. It is a dark gray rainy day. Actually it is raining cats and dogs this afternoon. Earlier I went down in the lower level to see if there was any evidence of water leaking into our basement. There was no sign of water on the floors down in the lower level. I will keep checking for water throughout this week. The rain has been predicted to turn to snow by nightfall. I hate to be on the roads tomorrow morning when there will be a layer of ice on the freeways.

So here I sit alone writing as usual in my online diaries. I feel like taking a nap, but I will keep my eyes opened till my bedtime. Last night I went to bed rather late for me, which was around 11:15 PM. I was surprised I fell asleep fairly easily last night considering I have been sick with a early Winter cold. I am though feeling much better this afternoon.

I got up this morning around 5:50 AM and spent the morning hours writing in my paper diary, I filmed a video for my Youtube channel, and read into the afternoon hours from a book titled, 'The Life of Jesus Christ' Part Two Volume 1 Chapters 1-57 by Ludolph of Saxony. After reading 'The Life of Jesus Christ.' I decided to read for awhile this afternoon from a book titled, 'The Hour Of Fate: Theodore Roosevelt, J. P. Morgan, And The Battle To Transform American Capitalism' by Susan Berfield.

Last night I read before going to bed from a book titled, 'The Interior Circuit: A Mexico City Chronicle' A Memoir by Francisco Goldman.

Carol did call from out West this morning to see how I am was doing. She also called me last night before she went to bed. We had a time of prayer over the phone.

Well, there is not much else to report so I will close to ponder.
