his life long passion for books

It is 9:40 AM Tuesday morning in the flow. I am down in the lower level right now. I do not know why I came down here. It is a dark rainy morning here in West Michigan.

I got up this morning around 7:30 AM and now it is 9:41 AM. I have done nothing exciting this morning. I made oatmeal for breakfast and I wrote in my paper diary.

Last night I watched television and went to bed around 11:40 PM. So goes existence.

These days I have been mainly reading a novel titled, "Laura Warholic or, The Sexual Intellectual" by Alexander Theroux.

Well, I can not think of anything important to write about this morning. It is too wet to go anywhere this morning. I am not in the mood to read or write, so I will sit down here waiting it out.

This morning I shared with my wife a memory from our seminary days in Mississippi. Many years ago when we lived in Mississippi and I was a student at Reformed Theological Seminary I had to be licensed to be able to exhort in that Presbytery. To be licensed by a local Presbytery each candidate is examined by teaching and ruling elders in the areas of Bible knowledge, Reformed doctrine etc. . . I remember being in a small room with several seminary students and ministers in a country church and being asked by one young minister if I had every preached before? I answered the minister by saying when I was on staff at a Rescue Mission in California that I had preached thousands of times. After I said that the minister said he wanted me to preach right now before this small group. The minister was asking me to stand up and expound the Scriptures. I do not remember if I did and if I did I must have made a fool of myself. In looking back now how I should have answered was that I was not prepared to preach since I had not studied a biblical text etc. . . It was really not right for that minister to put me on the spot like that-he was really putting me down.

When we were in seminary I was in my early 30's and as the years have gone by my understanding of preaching has changed. I use to think one could not preach the Scriptures unless one feels the unction of the Holy Spirit. One has to feel something in order to preach. I do not believe that notion any longer. One is to preach the Bible because it is the Word of God. As the Word of God is preached the Holy Spirit applies it to the hearts of the hearers.

Also I do not believe preaching is declaring Reformed Theology/Calvinism/doctrinal preaching. Preaching is not lecturing on the teachings of the 17th century English Puritans. Reformed doctrine won't save anyone.

We are to preach the Bible and nothing else.

I told Carol I miss not preaching the Bible. I have a lot to give to a local church. I am 62 years old and have a lot of spiritual insights into the Christian life. I have been reading and studying the Bible for 44 years. I love the Lord Jesus Christ.

I keep wondering if someday I will once again be able to exercise my spiritual gifts. But maybe God is judging His people by taking away men who can declare his holy Word. I do believe we are in the Great Apostasy prophesied in the New Testament/the great falling away.

Well I thought I would share these reflections.

(When we were in seminary I preached in many small country churches throughout Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas. I taped all those sermons on cassettes and once in awhile I will listen to one of my sermons. I not only taped each time I preached, but I also taped every time I taught a Sunday School class.)

"[6] And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
[7] For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
[8] And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
[9] Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
[10] And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
[11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
[12] That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness." 2 Thess. 2:6-12
